APXA Founder

Dr. Navin Shah, a practicing urologist in the United States (U.S.), founded the American Professional eXchange Association (APXA) with the goal of improving relations between professionals in the United States and their counterparts around the globe. Through the APXA program, professionals in a variety of fields benefit from an exchange of ideas and culture.

Working to improve medical education and healthcare in India, Dr. Shah has initiated numerous programs over the last 25 years. Some of his contributions include:

  • Providing continuing medical education to physicians in India
  • Securing donations of medical equipment for Indian hospitals
  • Introducing Ayurveda (Indian system of medicine) education for physicians in the U.S.
  • Initiated a three year post-graduate specialty training in Infectious Disease in India
  • Aligning regional hospitals and government agencies to provide previously unheard of 24-hour emergency medical services and trauma centers in Mumbai to the 18 million residents of Mumbai
  • Currently in the process of establishing a system of certification and accreditation for hospitals in India

Dr. Shah studied medicine at the University of Pune in India before training in urology at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He currently serves as Medical Education Director for the Metropolitan Urological Institute. Dr. Shah is a co-founder and past President of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), and past President and Chairman of the American College of International Physicians. He also served in leadership positions on several committees at Washington, D.C. area hospitals and the Maryland State Medical Society.

He is the recipient of multiple local and national awards, including the “Persons of the Year Award” from India Abroad; “Most Distinguished Service Award” of AAPI; and “Outstanding Physician Award” by the American College of International Physicians. He is a Diplomate with the American Board of Urology; and the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. Dr. Shah has been in the practice of Urology in the Washington, D.C. area since 1975.
